“Our ultimate goal is to help create a climate where girls feel empowered to become
leaders and create change in the community and beyond.” says Wendy Morin, CV Girls’
Group coordinator, facilitator and trainer, and Courtenay City Councillor. “We know that
by the age of 11 or 12, girls have already been significantly impacted by barriers related
to their gender, race and socio-economic status. We also know that less that 20% of
political and corporate leaders are women. It is our hope that the program will help
participants believe they have a voice and can aspire to become these leaders.”

Regional EOC Provides Update on COVID-19 Enforcement

Comox Valley local governments are supporting the Government of British Columbia in the effort to contain the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) by assisting with public education on new enforcement orders.

Local bylaw officers are not empowered to ticket or detain people over public health enforcement orders, any enforcement will be conducted by the local RCMP or provincial enforcement officers. Bylaw officers will pass along any complaints provided to the RCMP for follow-up.

Production Well Drilling in Oyster River Nature Park

To facilitate the installation of the production well, active machinery will be operating within the Oyster River Nature Park, located within the SRD’s Oyster River area. Work will be occurring intermittently from August 26 through to September 18 resulting in some physical and noise disruptions. Partial trail closures will be in place over a three-day period from August 26-28 and an additional three-day period the second week of September. Signs will be posted to indicate which trails must be avoided. For public safety, the SRD is asking park users to travel on open trails only until the work is complete.

Stage 3 Water Restrictions Take Effect September 1

The Comox Valley Water System will move to Stage 3 water restrictions beginning September 1 through to September 28, 2020. BC Hydro will be draining their Penstock for planned maintenance repairs as it does each September, which requires the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) to move to its emergency back-up pump station to draw water from the Puntledge River for the entire duration.

he Welcoming Communities Coalition of the Immigrant Welcome Centre is conducting a Needs Assessment research. We are hoping to collect data from newcomers, other residents and service organizations. This information will help us identify gaps and overlaps in service delivery in order to ensure that our local programs and services are addressing critical needs of the community. The survey results will be used to guide how organizations work together to improve services to best support international immigrants/newcomers as well as the community.
