We are excited to announce that the Immigrant Welcome Centre’s Welcoming Communities Coalition will be hosting our interactive Community Forums virtually on Wednesday November 18th in Campbell River and Thursday November 19th in Comox Valley from 2pm – 4pm.

We will be engaging community members, Welcoming Communities Coalition and other stakeholders in an interactive discussion on solution-focused ways to respond to discrimination and racism in our communities.

We have two speakers from North Island College. Daryle Mills, Elder in Residence, frequently participates in local cultural events, where he shares culture through storytelling, and Cree and Lakota teachings. He has provided social services and youth support for the last 16 years. Dr. Jen Wrye, a broadly trained sociologist and professor with expertise in Social Justice Studies, will offer a scholarly perspective on addressing discrimination and racism. These presentations will be followed by interactive breakout sessions to give participants an opportunity to discuss key learnings, lived-experiences and solutions to work toward ending discrimination and racism  in our communities. Our Needs Assessment Research is going great and we appreciate everyone who responded to our surveys and interviews. Data collection is wrapping up and we are now moving to the review and analysis phase. The final report is expected in the new year, 2021. Thank you for your commitment in cultivating and fostering Welcoming Communities!
