People will get a chance to see Time of Things — a powerful exhibition of work by five Indigenous women — when the Comox Valley Art Gallery re-opens with part-time hours starting Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
After Saturday, the Gallery will be open Wednesdays from noon to 7 p.m., Fridays from 2 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. People can also contact the gallery at 250.338.6211 or email@example.com to book special appointments for small groups.
“We are so pleased to welcome visitors back to the Gallery and provide people with a chance to see this powerful exhibition in person,” said CVAG co-curator Denise Lawson.
The Time of Things: The Continuum of Indigenous Customary Practice into Contemporary Art is guest curated by visual artist, researcher and curator France Trépanier. It features work by artists Daphne Boyer, Maureen Gruben, Susan Pavel, Skeena Reece and Maika Echachis Swan.
“The Time of Things proposes to challenge the binary of traditional and contemporary art. It considers the continuum of Indigenous customary practices into contemporary Indigenous art through the work of five women artists,” says Trépanier.
“Through their various Indigenous perspectives, this exhibition explores how the concept of time informs the production of Indigenous art today. It looks at how time influences connections to materials and process and it delves into the influence of intergenerational memory and knowledge passed through time on art-making.”
Time of Things originally opened at CVAG on March 14, but was open for only one day before all of Courtenay’s cultural facilities were closed as a result of COVID-19. The exhibition was originally scheduled to close in May, but as result of the global pandemic it has been extended until Sept. 11.
Visitors will be required to wear masks and apply hand sanitizer before entering the gallery. There is a maximum capacity of 6 individuals or two bubbles of a total of eight visitors allowed in the Gallery at any one time.
