Net proceeds from this event will benefit Comox Valley Transition Society’s Girls Group, and Comox Valley Arts. Performances are contributed by a cross section of women from throughout the Valley. (see below)
12 Angry Men was first an Emmy-award winning TV Movie in 1954, written by Reginald Rose, and later adapted for Stage by Sherman L. Sergel.
It’s the story of a young man, accused of murder, and the 12 jurors – all men – chosen to decide his fate… and just how they come around to doing that.
This story is just as relevant and important today. With the arguable verdicts that have been found in numerous cases in recent years, particularly when the defendant was aboriginal with few peers on their jury, the carriage of justice and the application of the criminal code deserve some scrutiny.
Additionally, and the impetus behind this project, is, 12 Angry Men aired on television in 1954. That is a full 19 years BEFORE women were universally allowed to sit on Juries throughout Canada and the US.
Canada is marginally ahead, in that by 1952 Manitoba was the first provincial court to allow women Jurors… the last one was Quebec in 1971. British Columbia falls right in the middle at 1964.
The 12000 Voices project is the passion project of US theatre producer, Lauren Class Schneider. She says, “ The need for continuing towards gender equality & gender parity is real. It’s vital to our [countries] and the entire planet. ‘12 Angry Men performed by 12 Impassioned Women’ allows us to use our voices to tell a story, make others think, and motivate others to action.”
Jurors will be portrayed by: Aly Bird, Meaghan Cursons, Camille Douglas, Tianna Franklin, Alice Grange, Arzeena Hamir, Carolyn Kirk-Albert, Theresa Lambert, Kathryn Miller, Wendy Morin, Josie Aileen Patterson, Amanda Ridgway, and Catherine Worthy Halkyard. Coordinated/directed by Kera McHugh.
