Roxanne’s Story

Mar 28, 2019 | Letters to Editor, News | 0 comments

Editor’s Note: This is the first article in a series created by Dorothea Gordon where she showcases individuals and business owners in the Comox Valley who had a dream, goal, or vision and made it come true, benefiting their community in the process. Roxanne’s Story below is meant to serve as a source of inspiration.

When I was living in Victoria I had acquaintances who regularly drove to Fanny Bay to dine at the Fanny Bay Inn or ‘FBI’ – that’s what the locals call their pub. Little did I know that soon I would be hanging out in this cozy place, too, because Life had moved me to Fanny Bay.

Shortly after my arrival here, I read an article about the amazing new owner of the FBI. The information touched my heart and so I filed it away in the back of my mind. Now that I am writing this blog series about (extra)ordinary people changing their lives due to a dream or a life altering event I remembered Roxanne. Her dream also benefits the community and amazingly so as we will see later.

Roxanne O’Brian had been working as a human resource manager in the oil and gas industry in Alberta when three years ago (2016) she was diagnosed with cancer and later the same year so was her brother on PEI. Her treatments were successful and to celebrate she and her husband came on a holiday to Vancouver Island. They went for lunch to the FBI where they heard it was for sale. She knew right there and then that she wanted to buy it.

When she got back to Alberta, she immediately quit her job. Within a week she had to go East because her brother had succumbed to his cancer and there was a service planned. As she entered the funeral home, she saw a huge picture of her brother in Western gunslinger gear and the letters FBI (wanted by the FBI) written on it. That was the revelation – the sign that she had been waiting for. She explained it to her spouse and the die was cast.

Saturday, she had seen the sign; Monday they went back to Alberta and sold everything because there was no turning back. That was in August 2016, on December 15 they bought the FBI.

She says that, at first, she felt overwhelmed because there was so much to do, but she had not counted on the community and how they came through for her. She was deeply touched by their kindness and support. To show her appreciation for the folks here, she decided to give back to them by means of a weekly Toonie draw. There are over 300 people registered and given a number that never changes. Every Thursday at 6 pm a number is drawn from a bucket of balls, and if you have put your Toonie in that week and your number is drawn, you get half of the money pot. Roxanne keeps the other half and distributes it to worthy causes in the community. I witnessed Roxanne come to my art group and hand us $ 1000 in cash to help with our projects. She has given over $ 11,000 away for community projects in the last two and a half years!

Roxanne says that one of the most amazing things occurs when she vacuums the pub floor: every night, without fail, she finds a dime!  When we believe that we live in an abundant Universe, we attract wealth in many areas. It may not be much at first, but it will add up eventually or morph into quarters and then loonies. Life is playfully telling her that she is on the right track

Roxanne has noticed that despite all the hard work she feels stronger and more tenacious now and ready to continue with her dream to renovate and modernize her pub. We, the people of Fanny Bay, and everyone else who drops into the FBI, are the richer for having Roxanne in our community. Thank you, Roxanne!
