Cumberland Recreation is continuing its collaboration with BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) and the University of British Columbia’s Active Aging Research Team to offer two free programs to encourage seniors to get up, get out and get active in 2019. Choose to Move and ActivAgeTM are free for anyone 65 years and older, who are not currently active, but want get moving.

Choose to Move is a free 6-month program where participants work one-on-one with an activity coach to develop a personal plan that fits with their lifestyle. For the first three months, participants meet with their activity coach for guidance, and will connect at least once a month with their peers and coach for support. Call 250-336-2231 to register for the free information session on Tuesday Jan 8th from 12:30 – 2:00 pm at the Cumberland Cultural Centre (upstairs).

ActivAgeTM is a free 3-month group physical activity program for inactive older adults. This program introduces participants to physical activity and reinforces their commitment to incorporate it into their daily lives. This fun and social program will help get participants moving in a relaxed environment with likeminded people. The program has two class options to choose from, Option 1 and Option 2. Option 1 focuses on improving activities associated with daily living and strengthening muscles used day-to-day. Option 2 is a slightly higher intensity and focuses on exercises that will enable participants to become more involved with other physical activity programs or sports.

Cumberland’s ActivAgeTM classes run Wednesday afternoons, from 12pm – 1pm (Option 1) or 1:15pm – 2:15pm (Option 2) from Jan 23 to Apr 24, 2019. This program takes place at the Cumberland Cultural Centre (upstairs). For more information or to register, contact Cumberland Recreation at (250) 336-2231. All of these programs also run at Comox Community Centre. For more information about Comox’s program, contact (250) 339-2255.
