The film, Finding Joe, explores the ideas of Joseph Campbell, who studied world mythology for decades. Campbell discovered a pattern hidden in almost every story, which he called “the hero’s journey”.

The archetype or pattern of the “hero’s journey” is present in most popular stories today, from Star Wars to Lord of the Rings to The Matrix. It provides a narrative for how to live a fully realized life, or as Campbell would state, how to “follow your bliss”.

Most of us don’t expect to slay monsters or uncover treasure, but understanding the stages of the hero’s journey can help inspire us to live fuller lives. To quote Campbell, “We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us”.

Interviews with author Deepak Chopra, skateboarder Tony Hawk, actress Rashida Jones, surfer Laird Hamilton, educator Sir Ken Robinson and many others illustrate how the “hero’s journey” has played out in their lives.

The film, Finding Joe, will be shown Friday, October 26th, at 7 pm at Comox United Church, 250 Beach Drive in Comox. Admission is by donation.
