The Strathcona Wilderness Institute (SWI) is hosting their 2018 Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, February 21, 7:00pm at the Florence Filberg Centre. The meeting will consist of Annual Reports, Election of the Board, followed by a short slide presentation and light refreshments.
SWI is a registered charity organization with a mission to inspire awareness, appreciation and stewardship of the natural world through education and participation. It serves as the interface between the general public and the Strathcona Provincial Park, providing information and programming for park visitors and operating both the Strathcona Wilderness Centre at Paradise Meadows and the Visitor Information Centre at Buttle Lake. “Strathcona Provincial Park is such a wonderful asset for our communities here on the Island, and this is an opportunity for park users and advocates to learn more about how they can support SWI and the responsible enjoyment of the park,” said Judy Norbury, Chair of the SWI Board of Directors.
There will also be a presentation on “Fossil Life of Strathcona Provincial Park: 300 Million Years Ago on the Sea Floor” by palaeontologist Randal Mindell. It will encompass the fossils from limestone of the Buttle Lake area, including crinoids, which are beautiful flower-like creatures distantly related to the modern sea-urchin.
Members of the public, former and potential volunteers are all invited to attend the AGM and learn more about SWI’s work, accomplishments and plans for the upcoming year. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of this organization, and we have many opportunities for volunteers to get involved, from leading guided walks and presentations in the park, to helping us with our
fundraising efforts and creating educational materials for public park users,” said Norbury. The Board of Directors would also like to invite anyone interested in being involved in the SWI at the organizational level, namely as a Director, to put their names forward for the upcoming election.
