Comox United Church will present the film “Angry Inuk” on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 7 pm.
This 2016 award winning NFB film follows Inuit filmmaker, Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, as she joins a new tech-savvy generation of Inuit campaigning to challenge long-established perceptions of seal hunting. Armed with social media and their own sense of humour and justice, this group brings their own voice into the conversation and presents themselves to the world as a modern people in dire need of a sustainable economy.
Opposing them are large well-funded animal rights groups pressuring the EU to ban all seal products, and who find opposing the seal hunt has been a lucrative fund-raising issue since the 1980’s. Today, it has also become an issue of social justice and reconciliation, as southern values are imposed on an indigenous northern culture.
The Film will be shown at 7 pm Friday, January 26, 2018 at Comox United Church, 250 Beach Drive in Comox. Admission is by donation.
