With new underground services installed and the first phase of paving now complete on Bevan and Cumberland Roads, to west of Hope Road, phase two of the Village Upgrades project has officially reached the half-way point. Businesses and homes along Cumberland Road, as well as the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre, are now easily accessible through the Village downtown core.

Construction has moved to the wetlands section located on the north side of Cumberland Road, near Union Road. Brush was cleared and silt fencing installed in anticipation of heavy excavation beginning this week.

Even though this area of construction is relatively small, construction will be slow, and is anticipated to take three to four weeks. The contractor will only excavate a small section each day to ensure that it may be filled and stabilized before the end of the work day.

Single lane, alternating traffic will be maintained on Cumberland Road during daytime working hours (7:00 am to 7:00 pm), and motorists should expect lengthy delays. Motorists are instead encouraged to use the detour route to assist with the efficiency and safety of the work.

“We are very pleased to see this stage of the work completed – and thank the community, in particular the business owners and patrons along Cumberland Road, for their patience during this construction,” said Mayor Leslie Baird.
“Cumberland Council and staff also wish to extend a huge thank you to the residents surrounding the construction zone, for their cooperation and understanding,” she added.

Work will continue through the summer with completion targeted for fall 2017.

The Village Upgrades project is part of a long-term Village commitment to improve Cumberland’s infrastructure. The Cumberland/Bevan Road phase includes widening the road and shoulder, improving drainage, replacing water lines, and adding new base materials, asphalt paving, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
