L’Arche is an international organization founded by Jean Vanier, with a thriving community in the Comox Valley.  One of the foundational principals of L’Arche is that all of us, regardless of our disabilities, have gifts to share.  Perhaps at this time in our world, these ideas are more important than ever.

L’Arche Comox Valley is launching the second annual Art of Belonging program, an opportunity to celebrate community, creativity and the wondrous variety of our beings.  This year, the theme is “Belonging as I am”.  The Art of Belonging program is centered around an eight week art workshop and will culminate in an evening (April 28th) where the workshop art as well as art from wider community and written works are celebrated.

In the workshop, Dean Bauche, a visiting artist from Saskatchewan, is guiding a group of people with diverse abilities and disabilities in the process of creating self-portraits to help express who we are.  It’s an exciting process, filled with laughter, sharing and expressions of courage and vulnerability.

To help bring the conversation about belonging to our community, L’Arche is also inviting artists in the Comox valley to submit self-portraits.  The way we define self-portraits for the Art of Belonging is best expressed by artist Jurgen Teller . “Everything in a wide sense is a kind of a self-portrait. It’s just the way you see things and you’re curious about certain things and just excited about them”.  Writers will also be invited to submit short pieces along the same themes of identity, diversity and belonging.
